This is one of the most superbly restored set of buildings we have seen. Creativity abounds in the presentation of the abbey and the hotel. Staff are lovely too.

Founded in 1100, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud (Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud) is now a museum and cultural center. The beautifully restored abbey complex includes a Romanesque abbey church with royal tombs, a lovely Renaissance cloister and a fascinating Byzantine-Romanesque kitchen.

Beautiful place but horrible customer service. This guys are not here to listen and help you. They wont try to make your experience enjoyable. I asked for a discount i deserved and they didn't give it to me but everyone else. Could be plain racism!!

Wonderfull !

The abbey church (1105-60) at Fontevraud is impressive but austere, lacking the usual warmth and intimacy of Romanesque churches because of the 19th-century destruction and heavy restoration. The church was built in a combination of Romanesque regional styles. The chancel and transept were built first in a typical Loire Valley style, with radiating chapels at the east end, while the slightly later nave reflects the influence of southwest France, topped with four cupolas on pendentives. Carved capitals in the nave, also in the southwest style, depict animals, plants, and biblical scenes.

Beautifully restored abbey with lovely buildings (especially the cloister) and garden. Well worth seeing.

Magnificent location and state of the art hotel offering superb accommodation close to other Loire Valley attractions. Allow half a day to explore Fontevraud Abbey itself.

We spent an incredible afternoon today at the abbey. For the reasonably low entry price (11 euros per person) there's certainly a lot to see. We liked what they had done with the restoration and there's a lot of information detailing the history of the site. They have also introduced an artistic aspect to the abbey, with exhibitions as you walk around. Our favourite bit (and complete surprise) was the catacombs, where they have had an artist create images with glow in the dark string. Sounds bizarre but was so atmospheric! We stopped for a lovely glass of wine at the abbey hotel too which was reasonably priced. I'd go back and encourage others to visit the catacombs.

simply an exceptional place.

The main attraction of the abbey church is a fenced-off area near the front of the nave, which contains four royal effigy tombs dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. Each one is topped with a painted effigy of its occupant. The remains of the royals are no longer in the tombs, and were probably destroyed at the Revolution.

The best views of the abbey are from the east, where extensive terraced gardens rise behind the chevet of the church and the Saint-Benoit infirmaries.
