On the 10 June 1940, the French Government fled Paris in an attempt to get across the Loire river before the advancing German army.
French Prime Minister Paul Reynaud installed himself in this place, the Chateau de Chissay. Accessible only by a very narrow road, an endless stream of official and not-so-official cars came and went.
Reynaud's mistress, Madam de Portes, was to be seen clad in a red dressing gown over red pyjamas, directing the traffic and ordering drivers where to park.
The whole place had an air of the madhouse about it, whilst the owner of the ancient property wandered around, somewhat bemused at the charade going on around him.
The Château de Chissay played a not insignificant part in the shameful episode of French history, the whimpering death of the Third Republic in that watershed year that was 1940.
Enjoy your stay in this lovely place, but spare a thought for the past, and the events that played out here.

Rooms felt dated and underwhelming given the grandness of the exterior. Much more impressive dining experience with course after course of well designed and considered dishes. The scallop starter was particularly good.

좀 오래되거나 했지만 서비스, 장소 모두 마음에 든다. 사람 한적한 시간에 다녀왔는데 너무나 꿈같던 장소였다. 레스토랑 맛있다. 밤에는 하루살이가 많아서 창문여는 것은 바추천한다. 조식 맛있다.

Restaurant vraiment très bien. Equipe professionnelle et sympathique. Concernant l'hôtel, la chambre est un peu décevante pour le prix (175€/nuit) car rien d'exceptionnel (lit standard, décoration simple). Déjeuner très copieux et servi en chambre, très agréable.

On y a passé un bon week end de pâques. Le personnel est adorable, très bonne table et c'est central pour qui veut visiter la région et ses châteaux ! Malheureusement la piscine n'ouvre qu'en mai, mais ça donnait envie !
