It feels totally morbid for me to review a cemetery, but Cimetière du Montparnasse was an absolute must-visit on my Paris trip. I had to pay homage to French pop legend Serge Gainsbourg, whose music has become some of my favorite for setting the scene on lazy Sunday mornings or romantic evenings with my love. And don't even get me started on the man's legendary lineup of famous French women - Gainsbourg was clearly genius in more ways than one.

This is a beautiful cemetery in the city centre, split in two by a city road!

You can spend a few hours walking through the serene lanes here and find some solace.

While there are good number of famous names buried here, I would suggest you just wander around. It's a quiet place, and there are some beautiful headstones. There are moving markers to remember individuals who died in wars past, as well as those who disappeared in the concentration camps.

Loved seeing Alekhine plot. Maybe a bit much for some but nice to see more than just a name. Nice and quiet. It is quite full. Man rays wife quote of unconcerned but not indifferent was nice too. Free map cards for loan available at main entrance. Staff helpful. Showed me plots. Not their job I'd suspect.

The cemetery is large enough to require maps, which you can pick up at a couple different entry points surrounding the grounds. There are many famous people buried there, but we just had one to visit. We paid our respects, soaked in the sun on a peaceful walk, and were gone just as soon as we arrived.

Although nearly 200 years old, it is very well maintained. I paid my respects to the resting place of author Guy De Maupassant, whose stories I enjoyed during my school days.

Maps are just about useless. We looked for 4 famous musicians who are buried. Only found one by accident. They should make out a computerized listing and GPS. If you go, you will be more impressed with the burial structures than the maps. Im generous with the 1 star. It is a beautiful spot.

Everybody goes to Père Lachaise, but also here you can tribute your salue to a lot of important witness of our recent and non history. Guy de Maupassant, Bartholdi, JP Sartre and Simon de Beauvoir

Peaceful, quiet, interesting, free... Especially after the waste of money and time at the catacombs.

A surprise to find this place. Very quiet and a lot of famous people are burried here. Graves are not that spectacular but still worth a visit when in the neighborhood.
