Who knew a cemetery could be so beautiful. Some of these mausoleums are beautiful works of art. You could spend hours walking the different streets and not see all of this place.

Walking around in silence and contemplation, simply admiring the beauty of the tombs and monuments that line this huge area, is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

Definitely download the map from the website if you are looking for anything in particular. I spent a long time wandering around searching for the grave of Edith Piaf and finally found it after asking a caretaker for directions - it's right near the path!
We got to see the memorable process of a grave apparently being dug up (end of lease perhaps)? Which we spotted from for away with the help of the strong scent of burning incense. Never seen anything like that before.
It's well worth visiting just to enjoy the views from the hill, the quiet seclusion, and the beautiful monuments - rather than just visiting the celebrities and then leaving.

Lots to take in, but please remember to be respectful of your surroundings - funerals do still happen on site.

What an incredible place to visit. Rammed full of history, outstanding architecture, well maintained gardens, and a sprinkling of celebrity... It's hard to believe I'm talking about a cemetery!

Chopin, Piaf, Morrison, Haussmann..... you name it and they are all resting here. It's grand scale of cemeteries make you feel like you're at an amusement park rather. There's a very strange rule here that PERMITTED CARS ARE ALLOWED TO ROAM AROUND INSIDE THE CEMETRY WHERE AS BIKES CAN'T EVEN ENTER THE GATE. I wonder which is more dangerous to the pedestrians and to the envrionment.

This is very big and there aren't a lot of exits once you enter the cemetery, so be prepared to stay in!

Many famous people buried here. The name itself is all over classical French literature. One of the must see places in my opinion.

I could not have imagined such a place before I visited this beautiful cemetery which has a quite and serene atmosphere. It is a truly humbling place and you get to witness many family legacies and beautiful gardens. The highlights were Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde.

Jim, Frederic, Oscar, Moliere are not to be missed. Some guy was playing "The End" at Jim's grave, and that, honestly, might have been one of the best moments of my illustrious life.

Very atmospheric cemetery, although there are lots of people around it is always quiet. So much more to see than just Jim Morrison. Do be aware that it is still a working cemetery, and there may be a funeral happening while you visit, so please be respectful.

This is free! Gates open at 8am on weekdays. We visited at 11am, under the beautiful blue sky and a sunny day, it was chilly with morning wind. April. It is very beautiful and peaceful. AND GIGANTIC. And I don't mean the cemetery itself! I mean each stone is gigantic. I am shorter than everything.

Every time I come to Paris, I visit this very beautiful place. the last time I came, I took a guide tour. It wasn't very expensive (as I remember maybe 20 euros), but the guide was so informative, so knowledgeable of the history, (pardon the pun), he made the place come alive. Its a beautiful, peaceful, historic and thought provoking place. There is certainly more to see than just Jim Morrison.

It's a beautiful place and some of the graves are on Google maps (Not Oscar Wilde though). Unfortunately people keep trashing Jim Morrison's grave. It was beautiful and simple 20 years ago but now people have been chipping stones off it to take home and it's covered in graffiti. The other graves however are still beautiful.

A must-see place if you're visiting Paris. I have been here numerous times and would go again in a heart beat. Do some research before you go, as it's quite large. If you are a music fan, be sure to check out Jim Morrison's grave. Take some time to visit the Holocaust memorial. And read up on and visit the graves of Héloïse and Abélard, the original star crossed lovers.

The cemetary is huge and absolutely gorgeous. We came here to visit Jim Morrison´s grave. It was not as hard to find as we thought it would be as we met a lot of people coming from the direction of the grave. It is very popular. It was beautiful to see so many people visiting this legend.

Awesome! I love this place. I try to go every time I'm in Paris. It's worth the effort. Some people have complained about the people who run this place, but they're a bunch of whiners. The staff, here, have been nothing but helpful, and they've always looked out for me--even the last time when I brought along a flask and was borderline drunk. The nice gentleman picked me up at closing time and drove me to the nearest exit--with a smile. I don't know why people think the French are rude. Try going to Manhattan!

Definitely worth a visit.
