Great place to walk around and learn more about the history of Montreuil, including the citadel's involvement as HQ for the British Army during WWI. Get the audio guide if you are not a French speaker as most written information is just in French.

This place often floats into my mind. It is one of those places that has a thing to it. You don't really know what that thing is but its a thing.

The inner forteress is not outstanding but you might prefer take walk around the citadelle and enjoy the beautiful sight.

Beautiful views, fascinating history and a wonderfully friendly cat! The staff in the shop were very helpful and friendly as well as speaking brilliant English. They even had medieval costumes for the children to dress up in as we walked around. A lovely afternoon was had by all.

Superbe citadelle. Les expositions y sont également très bien construites, la visite est un des meilleurs passages de la région.

Watched Les Miserables on 31 July 2016. The citadel was the backdrop. Hundreds in the cast, very impressive Son et Lumiere.

Stopped off in Montreuil for a picnic lunch break with a school group. Parked the coach near the station & took a short walk (5 mins, uphill) to the ramparts. Spectacular views from the walls lead you around to the Citadelle & also, the tourist information office. (note: 1 high-tech unisex public toilet here). Loads of info boards & few little surprises along the way (such as the beautiful statue of the Madonna & Child) add to the attraction of this location. The Citadelle itself charges an small entry fee, as it houses museums, historical displays, etc.., however the wall walks, moat & recreational areas are pretty much open access. Reputed to be an inspiration on Victor Hugo, ...if you can get here when the village presents their version of Les Miserables, do!

A caveat, I am not good with heights and it can get pretty exposed.

What a place, a great deal of imagination is required to look for the coastline that once lapped the foot of the hill. Time has taken it away. Buy a picnic in the centre of town and walk the ramparts. Plenty of seats on which to sit and eat.
