Small take of Matisse's life on this beautiful building. Only handful of his work here as most famous works are in other museums. They're extending the place, but it's currently under construction.

Good little museum much more focused on his life rather than his work (mainly smaller, lesser pieces here). Can't go wrong if visiting other museums included in the ticket price too.

Place is quite far out of the city center, you need a bus to get there. The art pieces are good, but I felt that a lot of his great works weren't there. But if you're a Matisse fan, then I think that it's at least worth a visit

Mixed feelings here. We went in April and it was quiet. It's a lovely building and nicely laid out. It's lacking the best works of Matisse. However no photographs at all allowed. Most other places do, so I returned with nothing to help my memories - I really do despise this

Sadly to say but this half day was such a waste. Matisse is one of my favourite painters and we all looked forward to seeing some of his greatest artwork at THE Matisse museum in Nice.
The collection displayed constrains mainly plain sketches and none of the known artwork except for maybe one less known artwork for larger walls.
The museums' boutique has pictures and posters of the top paintings or artwork which then becomes absurd since NONE of these are displayed at the museum.
Do not waste €10 here.

In his former home in Nice, you can find the Matisse Museum. Outside of him being one of my favorite artists, you can see the simplicity of his life and work by being in his home. They have some ancient Egyptian statutes and other artifacts that Matisse acquired in his lifetime. It is a must see if you make it to Nice.

Excellent gathering of master pieces and works of the artist. Impressive collection.

Disappointing. On top of the outstandingly rude staff at ticket desk, there is little of interest inside. Very little written in English. Audio app you have to use on your own phone didn't even work. Don't bother giving them your money until they've upped their game.

Rude staff, at the desk and in the rooms. We were told to be quiet when we were discussing an art piece. The collection didn't live up to my expectations, although it's nice to see all the different things Matisse could do. If you get in for free, it's worth it if you have a picknick in the park next to the museum afterwards.

*** we did talk with a couple locals that said this museum isn't worth it but we do love his art so had to make the effort regardless ***

beware, the ticket office closes at 5:30p and they will not let you in + this tidbit isn't posted anywhere so they turned us away as rude as they possibly could ... the lady got so tired of listening to me plead to get in that she said "I don't speak English (in perfect english)
*

we arrived at 5:35p and they wouldn't sell us a ticket even though the museum closes at 6p.

We came here after visiting Chagall museum, so our expecations were highs but were got really disappointed. The museum is not bad, but the are not much things to see and from a painter famous like Matisse we expected more.
Lucky for us we entered for free as we are students.

I would definitely recommend going to this museum, although it is a bit far away from the city centre or the beach. However, on your way there you really get to know the city.

Where are the paintings?

if I could give it zero stars I would and not because of the artist and his works but because of their terrible customer service. extremely rude and had no compassion for our situation.

very sad as we really wanted to go but it seems that little rules like that ticket offices closing should be posted somewhere...frustrating

we also told them that we're leaving on a plane tomorrow but they wouldn't budge. all three of them just shook their heads and turned us away.

Beautiful setting and building and so authentic to the art and artist. Loved learning about Matisses beliefs about objects as contextual actors. Loved seeing the photos of the artist. Just wish there had been a little bit more art from the middle of his career. But it was beautiful!

Nice little museum with some lesser important works of Matisse. The most interesting part of the visit is the history on Matisse's life which is laid out in the route to follow through the different room. €10 entry ticket, which allows access for 24h to all of the museums that belong to the city of Nice. Most of those are not worth €10 on their own, so good to plan a day of doing some of these museums together.
