Site of the Paris massacre of 1961 and the source for the "here we drown Algerians" graffiti as a result of the infamous "Drowning by Bullets" actions against nonviolent protestors perpetrated by the police commissioner Maurice Papon. Hundreds of peaceful protestors were illegally detained, tortured and dozens were killed and subsequently disposed of in the Seine like so much garbage. It is an ugly legacy and an unfortunate blemish to an island so central to Parisian identity and history.

Really good experience here. I had to get my carte de sejour renewed and they didn't mind my bad French. I scheduled an appointment after lunch on a Thursday and everyone was happy. If you have your documents in order and cause no problems, you should have an easy experience here. A+ to the people in Porte 8.
