A pleasant enough way to while away 2 and a half hours, going from central Paris to La Villette through Canal Saint Martin.

The boat was fine too and includes a bar (or as we know it, a fridge, a coffee machine and your host)

The canal goes through the heart of Paris, starting with a mile-long unlit tunnel... Pretty boring, I hear you say, but no, the aeration ducts throw light onto our co-passengers and glimpses of the structure are actually quite interesting.

At the end, you are rewarded by going through Bassin de la Villette, a vibrant area in the north of Paris.

Paris off the beaten track. I would never have discovered this part of Paris: the bassin and vilette

Nice boat tour on Canal St. Martin

The commentary was, well, a commentary, it was fine, especially if you're not from Paris.

We had a great time and a wonderful narrated guide up the Canal St Martin. Very cool to see a different side of Paris and hear some history regarding the modern city.

Great views of lesser-known parts of the city along and under the canal St. Martin. Guide Robin and captain Bruno were awesome.

We took the St Martin cruise in Aug, 2016 and it was banal, loud, and utterly lacking character. Along the 2.5 hour cruise most of time was spent waiting for lock gates to open and then close. The neighborhoods we passed by were not particularly appealing or interesting. I would not recommend the cruise because it is a waste of money and time.

So, chill out, you can watch people and places go by on the banks and make sure you come back by metro!

When you are lucky and come during winter you might enjoy entire boat for yourself. We were only 8 people on a boat for 100+. When you come to Paris for second+ time you should take a boat trip. Make sure you check the departure time since there only few trips a day during winter.

The part with the locks took far too long, but there's nothing they can do about it, the locks have to be gone through and each one takes several (long) minutes with nothing happening.

Next comes the canal's outdoor run, with a large number of double-locks. The first couple of locks are all good and fun, the rest are really quite tedious as nothing much happens.
