This is a fascinating place to visit. This replicates the first two Chambers. It is an exact replica down to the centimeter using the painting techniques they used originally to paint the caves. It should be noted that you can't go into the original caves due to the human interaction with a human breath that causes decay of the paintings

Impressive réplica, but still just a replica

Very interesting pre-historic site. It's a pity that what you see is the replica and not the real thing.

You really do have to see it in person. It may be a reproduction but it is phenomenal! The guides are great and explain all about what has been discovered about how they made it.

The replicas of the caves were fine, but the treatment of the animals seemed ( at least to me) horribly grotesque. In French, here it is: (pardon) Le condition des animaux là, c'était vraiment horrible et grotesque. The cows there were underfed, their ribs sticking sharply out for all to see, the ground was hard and probably uncomfortable, the food there was scarce, and water? Oh noooooo cows don't need THAT. There was this one bull, I remember, he was lying on his side, with a swollen wound on his side (from being punctured by something) that was just oozing blood and pus, and the flies were all over it. And the flies, those were the worst part. In those would-be soft, beautiful kind eyes of a cow, instead there were thousands of flies attempting to get at the moisture in those glassed-over spheres, because the sun was unbearable, and guess who didn't have any shade? My experience was in July of last year, so I hope it's changed by now. Either that, or the cows have died and Lascaux is showing their skeletons, because they probably wouldn't notice. So delete this comment and keep all the good ones, giving bonuses to your employees for putting good reviews, but that won't help those cows, will it? Because obviously you won't.

Visit can be rather frustrating when having a small child with you. The guide informed us in advance that we should leave if our daughter (2) became too noisy. Fair enough, so we kept to the back of the group. She was just happily babbling a bit and no nuisance to anybody but to the guide, who nervously kept interrupting her talk as soon as our daughter made a single noise, to ask us what we wanted to do. In our opinion the guides should be more chilled about this, or they should just ban children under 2 from entering altogether. In the end I left halfway so the guide would stop moaning and give the rest of the group the tour they deserved. Tip when taking a small child (and 2 parents): plan 2 tours one hour apart, so one can stay outside with the baby.

Brand new high tech visitor centre (opened Dec 2016) and guided tours, also digital tablet to translate and explain. Superbly well conceived and thought provoking. Excellent cafe too.

Don't let the fact that this a reproduction turn you away. It is a fascinating visit. Tour are offered in a bunch of languages. Note tour tickets need to be purchased at the local tourist information office.

Here's a note specifically for photographers. No photography is allowed.

Just a note to Future Travelers - they are building another replica of the caves just outside of town. This replica will have more chambers. Our group was told that the completion date of this new facility will be done around December of 2016.

A brilliant reproduction of one of the most significant pre-history cave art sites. Excellent guide provided many thought provoking theories of the meaning (if any) of the depictions.
