TASCHEN에 들러 이것저것 구경하고 가지고 싶은 책이 몇 권 있었지만 한국까지 도로 들고 갈 자신이 없었기에 대충 라는 작은 책을 기념 삼아 한 권 구입하기로 했다. 가격은 €7.99였다. 잔돈은 거의 다 쓴 상태였고 캐시로 살래, 카드로 살래 라는 점원의 질문에 캐시로 사겠다고 대답했고 'Why not?'이라는 같잖은 농담 섞인 말을 들었을 때부터 묘하게 빈정이 상했다. €20를 냈고 €10를 지폐로 먼저 거슬러 받았다. €2.1의 거스름돈이 남은 상황. 클라이막스는 이 부분인데 점원이 'sorry'라면서 훗 하고 웃더니 20유로센트 5개, 10유로센트 10개 그리고 1유로센트 1개를 데스크에 올려두었다. 2유로 동전 1개, 1유로센트 동전 1개, 단 2개의 동전으로 거슬러줄 수 있었던 돈을 무려 16개의 동전으로. 내가 동전을 잘 집지 못하자 또 씩 웃으면서 sorry라고 이야기했다. 동양의 원숭이가 묘기 부리는 걸 구경하고 싶었던 걸까. 일단 오흐브와-하고 가게에서 나왔는데 곱씹을수록 굉장히 불쾌했다. 관광객이 많은 파리에서 이런 대우를 받게 될 줄은 생각지도 못했다. 직원들의 태도와 서비스 품질이 개선되어야 마땅하다.

I dropped by TASCHEN yesterday night. There were so many books that I want to purchase, but I cannot. Because of the books' weight. I decided to buy a small and light book for souveunir. The price was €7,99. The clerk asked me "Do you want to pay in cash or by credit card?" So I answered "Cash" and he told me "Why not?" I felt his tone was unnecessarily patronizing. Anyway I paid €20,00 bill. He gave me a bill €10,00 first and started counting coins. And then he put 5 coins of 20 eurocent and 10 coins of 10 eurocent and 1 coin of 1 eurocent on the desk for just give me change €2,10. And he said "Sorry". He could give the change 2 coins, coin of 2 euro and 1 eurocent. I'm sure he was mocking me. It was hard to pick all coins on the desk because slippery surface. And the clerk smiled and told sorry again. At that time I just left the shop with good bye, but I felt disgusting on him as time went through. It was definitely discrimination by skin color or human race. He totally screwed up yesterday night.
