Came for a week's skiing early December. Snow good enough to ski the whole area. 5 days sunshine. Brilliant!

Excellent national park just 12 hours from London by train. Definitely recommend coming outside the summer season before winter (we came in early October) as you have the place to yourself (almost) and the refuge winter rooms are virtually empty.

Perfect in the snow and in the summer too. Complete escape.

Tignes exemplifies the massive destruction that mankind can impose on the natural environment for his futile (but highly lucrative) leisure activities. Hike beyond the mega-ski resorts and there remain some spectacular hiking trails, rock climbs, back country ski and snowshoe treks.

Super beautiful Alps natural park, wildlife and special flora. For hikers or mountaineers mainly, but at the edges accessible to a larger public.

A gem of French Alps, the Vanoise glacier loop is an absolute must do, but definitely requires a bit of prep. There are also plenty of day hikes.

Incredible views. Even better to hit the mountain passes in a Porsche GT3! Stunning roads and surreal backdrops.

It's so amazing I have no words to explain. People lounge around on the grass soaking up the sun in the grandeur of the high peaks. The lazy mirrored lake sits quietly below, begging you to dip your toes in its cool water. The retired fortress invites you to take the strenuous trek up the mountain and when you arrive you are rewarded with an amazing panorama. It's worth the visit.
