Well, I say end point - we had to retrace our tracks, of course, to get back to the car.

They made an interesting end point to our walk, seeing their gorgeous position on top of the dunes facing the sun as it sets in the ocean of an evening.

What you can't do is make an independent trip down the river, as it is a protected nature area. On the lake shore you can hire canoes, pedaloes and those wonderful silent electric boats - great fun and no effort - but there are buoys in the lake with notices warning you to keep well away from the entrance to the Courant.

Peace, calm and beauty.

There are several walks alongside the river (although you can often barely glimpse it, due to the thick foliage). You can start at the Pichelebe bridge on the D328, there's a small parking area for cars.

Très bel endroit.

At this point you have the choice: go west towards the sea, go east towards the lake.

It's quite pricey - €13, €18 or €23 for 2, 3 or 4 hours - but you have to bear in mind that there are only half-a-dozen paying passengers in each boat and the poor man has a pretty hard slog of it, especially rowing back against the current. You generally need to reserve the day before.

To go on the river itself, you have to join the little flotilla of rowing boats that leaves, twice a day, from the wooden information centre "Les Bateliers du Courant d'Huchet" at one end of the beach on the south shore of the Lac de Leon.

Going towards the sea you are pretty flabbergasted - well, I was, anyway - to come out of the forest and suddenly see the dunes with half a dozen houses on the top. No proper road access, just a sandy track - surely they need a 4x4? And as they are clearly holiday homes only, does this mean that they have to have a special car just for coming here?

Or both!

A lovely day out, whether you walk, get an electric boat, or get rowed by a strong young man.

On the other hand, you can go east towards the lake. Lovely and cool in the woods, glimpses of the river, you can sometimes hear the boatmen and their passengers.
