In 2004 my wife Jackie and I visited Bray Dunes to take my father in-law, Norris Soar of Chilwell near Nottingham, back to an area that he had not seen since World War 2. Norris remembered a little cottage on the road side where he had been stationed as forward observer for the artillery. He recalled the sky light window from which he had watched the shells, that he had guided, land amongst the German lines. We found the exact cottage which he assured us looked exactly as it had 60 years previously. One night he had stolen a large candle from the Notre Dame church close by and taken it back to the cottage for some warmth. Norris asked us to take him back to the church where he placed £5 in the collection box to pay for the candle he had stolen 60 years ago. Whilst at the church he pointed to the church hall next door and told us he and a pal had been in the church on one occassion when the German Army arrived. They crept into the hall and burrowed under the stacks of chairs and hid in the corner beneath the chairs overnight whilst the German officers slept in that hall. The next day the Germans left and the two pals emerged feeling extremely lucky to have remained hidden. Nick Mair of Bluntisham Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, England
