Good food , plentiful, serving so and so

My wife and I passed this place three years ago after driving for eight hours from Libourne (nr. Bordeaux) in my Citroen 2cv. Our destination was the ETAP at Versailles, but it was full so we returned to Coignieres simply because it was the next nearest ETAP motel.

So to find a superb specialist fish restaurant with excellent decor and ambience was a real surprise. As the name suggests, La Criee has a romanticised ideal of a French (specifically Breton) fishing village about it, but blended with modern contemporary design so it didn't come across as tasteless and tawdry. Everything about it was really impressive: the menu, service, cleanliness (probably the cleanest toilets we encountered in a two week roadtrip through France) and most importantly the food was outstandingly good. Even the selection of bread rolls was excellent. Prices weren't cheap by general standards, but for a specialist fish restaurant they certainly were. We paid around £50 for a three course meal with wine: a similar meal in the UK would have been rather more expensive.

Tres chouette cadre. Bon rappport qualité prix. Portion correcte

The restaurant has limited parking at the front, but a large car park to the rear (look at the street view picture: the entrance is through the opening to the right, but the car park is also accessible from minor roads to the rear).

La Criee has since expanded and currently has 39 locations across France; my wife and I really hope that they eventually open a branch in southern England and we'll certainly go out of our way to visit another branch next time we're driving anywhere near one. Currently, the closest equivalent that we have in the UK are the chain of Livebait restaurants, but even three years ago they were a distant second in terms of food quality to La Criee.

To say that I was tired after such a monumental drive was an understatement and I simply wanted to eat as close as possible to the motel. Coignieres itself is a deeply unattractive truck-stop of a town: basically a strip-mall and various industrial outlets with a really unpleasant banlieu de Paris feel about it, and the ETAP reflected it. Full of long-distance professional drivers and hookers and it was the first one we'd been to which we felt uneasy about.
