I attended the Brest International 2016 festival this year and visited a stand selling Bordeaux wines, where I tasted the official Festival wine. The bottles were marked “Vin Officiel, Fetes Maritimes Internationales, Brest 2016”, “Montagne Saint-Emillion 2014”, “Confrierie des Vignerons. Montagne-Saint-Emillion”, and “Mis en bouteille par J.B. AUDY – 33500 France”.
St Emillion is one of my favourite wines and I know it quite well. The tasting I had was excellent, with a nose full of fruit, a deep ruby colour, and just as I had hoped. However, to confirm my choice, I returned the next day to taste again, with the same result, so I purchased several bottles to keep for special occasions, as a souvenir of the Festival.
I opened the first one last week on my wife’s birthday. It was a total disappointment and my wife classed it as “undrinkable”. It was thin, very light in colour, acid and no fullness on the palette. It was not corked, nor vinegar, but simply just like a very cheap vin de table in our local workers restaurant (in fact not as good). We threw it away and I assume, if the rest is the same, we will also throw them away when we open them. I am 100% convinced that, despite all of the smart labels, this was NOT the same wine I was given to taste. If it was the genuine article, it was still terrible for a “Grand vin de Bordeaux”. How this came about, I have no idea, but I will not but wine from this chateau again.
