I spend a lot of time at this station considering my friend takes a train here everyday. I love the ambience here- travellers, locals, shops, piano music and the smell of bread from the cafés!

Please be careful. We were not spared from the scammers. We were looking at the metro map at Gare De l’Est and a man came up to us. He introduced himself as a tourist guide. He asked us if we need help getting around. At first we told him no because we were still planning our trip before we buy train tickets. He stuck around and we decided to accept his help. He recommended that we buy the travel day card which costs about €12. He confused us by showing us on the ticket machine that a trip within Zones 1-2 costs €8 which means better to purchase a travel day pass. We agreed and bought 2 travel days passes. We wanted to pay for the ticket but he stopped us and said he would pay with his credit card and that we pay him back in cash. Turns out the tickets we got were one trip tickets for children under 10 which cost half the adult fare. We found out later that he had cancelled the transaction on the ticket machine and had the tickets ready in his hands before he passed the tickets to us. We paid €23 when the tickets had only cost €1.90. Lesson to be learned when travelling in Paris.
