Must see for those into prehistoric times/cave paintings

The cave of Pech Merle is a spectacular prehistoric site, where ancient cave paintings can be visited in a spectacular environment that would be worth visiting in itself. Make sure you wear warm clothing as the caves are cold!

Cannot fault the location. The caves are great to look round and the cafe and shops are good to use beforehand. The fault was that we had a boring and ignorant tour guide who struggled to supply a tour translation booklet and went though a 25 minute presentation in french with no attempt to highlight basics or health and safety in English. After boring us to death on the presentation, he failed to support a guy who had breathing problems and did not radio for help leaving him to find his own way out. He also turned lights off in some areas before we got there as it was a big group, making it dangerous to walk in the dark even though a woman was carrying a small baby. The cave walk was rushed in general and ruined the experience.
So be careful when going on this tour as you can not walk at your own pace, may be bored and confused, and it can be slightly dangerous due to low oxygen and tour guide being an idiot.

Amazing experience to see the real cave paintings of 29000 years old. Plus the unbelievable rock formations. There's a folder in English and other languages to help non French speakers.

Pech Merle is absolutely incredible and well worth a visit. We drove over an hour to get here just for the tour as we had been told it was a great experience and we weren't disappointed. The feeling you get being 40m below ground in a cave used 29,000 years ago is extremely special.

Interesting history. Make sure you book beforehand as it gets incredibly busy and they have a strict quota for numbers. They do try to cater for tourists, although the tour was entirely in French, and the guidebook seemed lacking compared with the length of each presentation. Also take warm clothing, even in the height of summer, as it is rather cold in the caves. Photography of any kind is not allowed.

Very well done. Cave tours highlighting the history and showing the paintings from the cave dwellers. Tour takes an hour, dress warmly.

I did partly appreciate the beauty of this prehistoric cave. As the guide had to repeat the demonstrations for our oversized group of 16-18, her speech was very rushed. Eventually sadly we were told "Everyone, do have a quick look at the spotted horses on the left as you walk past on your way out, as they are unique, but PLEASE don't stop; we've run out of time." Tour times are now reduced to 45 minutes. The group of about 16-18 was FAR too large given this understandable time constraint. Our group felt very disappointed to have been so rushed. In my opinion, to have any hope of a successful 45 minute tour, maximum group size should be restricted to 8.
